Ancillary Task - Digipak - Final

Front of Digipak
For my front cover of my digipak I was inspired by Linkin Parks albums which looked very rock like. Furthermore I conformed to the  aspect of my genre by keeping to a grey scale which creates a very mysterious yet anarchical feeling to the digipak. I've placed my protagonist at the edge of the digipak in order to not lose the star image factor. This image also links back to the music video. The title is placed on a black background for contrast, in addition I've added the 'Parental Advisory' sticker, to allow buyers to be aware of explicit content. On the edge I've added the band name and the album name, all in the same font. Lastly I've added a sticker in the far right corner to allow the audience to know what singles are on the album such as including 'Drown' our A2 music video. There is a synergy between all three of my products, as there is a direct link between the music video and magazine cover.

Inside: Left side  (lyric book)
The side, I've kept simple with an image of the ocean along with the title of the album furthermore I've added a 'Rock Industry' logo as that is my productive company. In addition the grey scale is effective to a great extent as it creates a very shallow feeling, however portraying the stage of adolescents. Escaping from the world, in order to find one's self.
Inside: Right side (CD holder)
In addition the CD holder has the first band image which is great for star image, furthermore I've added a track list to help the buyer, in case the digipak is missing. It is also in greyscale to match the rest of the panels. This colour scale is also present on the magazine advert, along with the band long shot, in order to create synergy, between all three ancillary products.
The last panel for my digipak, also contains the track list which conforms greatly to how digipaks are created, Furthermore as inspired by Linkin Park, I placed the track list further down the center and added a picture of the protagonist above it, in order to be clearly visible. Furthermore I've added a bar code, a website and a small print for illegal downloading warning that is seem on almost every digipak. The record label is also on the bottom right hand corner for easy recognition.

Ancillary Task - Print Magazine Advert - Final

Daughters are an alternative rock genre for this reason, I would print the advert in the publication, Kerrang! magazine. They are well known for supporting rock bands but many of their adverts promote independent bands as well. It would feature alongside other adverts towards the back of the issue where Kerrang! print most of their advertisements for performances and upcoming releases of similar musicians. Magazine exposure could develop even stronger support from consumers for both Kerrang! and the band. I've also made few alterations to the advert as I've changed it from an 'EP' to 'song' as EP's only consist of around five songs on an album. I've also centered the band, and images from the music video above and below. Furthermore I've added rating from well known rock magazines, and a QR code, to scan and be able to view the song and album quickly. There is synergy between all three ancillary tasks, such as all the picture's used are also part of the digipak, which basically is footage taken from the A2 music video, that we also produced. In addition the font's have been kept the same throughout all three tasks.

Ancillary Task - Print Magazine Advert - Draft

In creating my magazine advert I used three different software's. I used two apps that I came across on the App store 'font candy' and 'split pic' which were great in enabling me to blend pictures together and finally I used 'Publisher'. In addition 'font candy' allowed me to put text above an image, so the image is only seen through the cut out of the letters. I placed a star image of Georgie in the texts which will be in the center of the magazine advert. There were also special effects on the apps' and I used the effect 'rise' which created a more warm and toned down color which reflects the same as in our music video 'Drown'. Using 'split pic' I was able to put the images together like a collage. I used images from the actual music video as it is promoting the new single also the band will be featuring on the magazine advert, however I am still deciding on how to do this. Finally I used Publisher in order to add the details, such as the band name, website and album release. With also the addition of a QR code to enable customers to quickly scan on the go, and rating from well known music magazines, which would boost sales to a great extent.

Draft Magazine Advert

Here are a few drafts for my magazine advert, I am using a trial and error method, in order to see what suits best. I believe I should add a band image in the final magazine advert, in order to gain recognition for the band. However the choice of pictures I believe I will keep for the main product, as there is a direct synergy between the music video, digipak and magazine advert

Digipak Analysis 3 - The 1975 - The 1975

Here is my digipak analysis of The 1975 - The 1975 album, the album is also part of a grey scale similar to that of Linkin Park which perhaps suggests the bands attitude, as being more serious aspect of the band. The self titled digipak is also very effective, as for market production it is quiet simple to remember for the audience, to a significant extent. I have been inspired to make my digipak similar to that of Linkin Park and The 1975, as the greyscale, seems personally more professional, and creates a dark and mysterious attitude, like you do not know what to expect, on the album.

Digipak Analysis 2 - Green Day Uno

Here is an analysis of Green Day's digipak Uno. This Alternative Rock digipak, differs greatly to that of Linkin Parks, however Green Day are considered to be more crazy, where as Linkin Park are more professional with everything that they do, perhaps this sis the reason for difference.

Digipak Analysis 1 - Linkin Park Minutes To Midnight

Here is an analysis of a digipak from Linkin Parks album. I quiet like the black and white theme that this band always has for the album covers, it's very effective for the Alternative Rock genre, similar to my song. I will take into consideration Linkin Parks digipak idea for my own. Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown where as white is a contrast maybe pure and light.

Digipak: What is it?

What is a Digipak?
Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums. Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. The generic "digipack" came to be used to describe all soft CD packaging. Digipaks were first created by MeadWestvaco, and their product, called Digi-Pak, is trademarked. However, as the format became more popular and began to be used by more manufacturers. Now in current times digipaks are very common and very popular.

Example of a digipak

How does a digipak benefit the artist?

Digipaks benefit the artist and their music as its promotional aspect of the music industry which helps bring awareness to the artist therefore selling the artist and encouraging consumers to buy and listen to their music. You could argue that buying a digipak establishes your loyalty to your artist

example of a digipak
The front of the digipak with have some aspect of what the artist represents and what their predominate genre is. The digipak will most likely embody and theme and a message about the artist image. This links to emphasizing the artist brand image which increases the popularity of the artist. The digipak also exemplifies the artistic and creative approach the artist is taking throughout the music. For example if there’s some futuristic idealism conveyed in the lyrics or the visuals in the music video then the front cover wouldn’t be very contemporary but more obscure and abstract. All aspects of the digipak, brand image and music video are all interwoven together.

Digipaks Advantages:
They look good, and many bands and labels like to use them for artistic reasons. The three section digipack sleeves opens up more design options because there is more room. However, they're more expensive than traditional liner notes and jewel cases.   They are visually much more appealing, and they are a good investment, because instead of collecting numorous amount of cds of the favoured artists; the consumer can just by for example a digipack of the artists greatest and they get extra bonus of a booklet extra cd/s.   Allows the customer to know more about their favourite artist via the booklet they can see who wrote the songs and its a good way to promote singer/song writers, photographers, musican that contributed to the dvd or cd.

 Digipaks Disadvantages:
Digipaks don't crack like jewel cases do, but they will rip and eventually the paper begins to peel apart and separate. The trays in digipaks break much more often then in jewel cases. There's not as much protection since the outer portion of made of paper, so the teeth that hold the CD in place crack and fall out easily. When the side of the tray does break in a digipak, the CD falls out of the bottom of the digipak, because unlike jewel cases, there is nothing to hold it in. CD's or normal dvds are a cheaper option than digipaks, only dedicated fans are likely to purchase a digipak.

Number of Panels
Digipaks can consist of 4, 6 or 8 panels. The most common being 4 but recently 6 panels is becoming a more preferred number for artists as they can include more disks and more songs, which massive fans love to purchase, and have a hard copy to add to their collection.

Media Showcase

The media showcase allowed all the AS and A2 productions to be shown to teachers and students. The comments for our video 'Drown' was very positive and satisfying. Our Alternative Rock video, surprised everyone, we had comments such as ' it seemed as though Daughters was a real band' and that 'the close up of Georgie were shot well'. We made feedback sheets which we put out on each chair in hope of getting some audience feed back.

The audience understood the narrative aspect of our video which was reassuring, to a great extent. Many of the 'Even Better If' sections were left blank which was a great feeling that all the hard work for our music video paid off. All of the productions this year were incredible, and so much hard work was put into everyone of them, and the showcase allowed greater audience feedback as there were a mixed age range.

Conventions of a magazine advert

  • The functions of magazine adverts are:• To promote the artist• To sell the song• To be eye catching
  •  The conventions of magazine adverts:• The release date• Album/Song title• Image of album cover• Artist name• Information about album• Where it is available to purchase• Record label logo
  •  How these conventions convey/ promote the artist at an audience and attract a target audienceThe release date This is important because the audience need to know when they are able to start purchasing the album.Album/song title This is important because to be able to purchase the album you would need to know the name of the album.Image of album cover This is important in an advert because to help the audience purchase the album they would need to know what the album looks like. Also the image may make the advert look more interesting.

Kerrang- Magazine Advert

Kerrang! would be the best place to put my magazine advert here is why:

Tell us about the Opportunity / What is it?

Kerrang! is the UK's largest weekly music magazine. Kerrang! is the original multimedia platform boasting magazine, online, radio, TV, K! Awards, K! Tour, and K! podcasts. Kerrang! loves music, especially rock. Kerrang! is considered by its readers to be an integral part of the scene rather than just a commentator. Each issue includes a balance of bands and scenes to guarantee that we're providing for our readers' need for variety and their passionate appetite for their favourite bands as well as their desire to be introduced to new music within our world.

What is the Marketing Objective?

Opportunity to build awareness of your brand with a young audience with a median age of 22. How does it work? Advertising opportunities in Kerrang! magazine range from display ads, advertorials, inserts, feature sponsorships, promotions and sampling. Brands have the opportunity to extend their campaign to Kerrang! Radio reaching 1.3m listeners, Kerrang.com attracting 172,600 unique users, Kerrang TV, which reached 7.1m viewers in 2009 and to Download Festival, which Kerrang! officially sponsor.

Who's used it in the past?

As well as music releases, Kerrang! is perfect for film and games, and also mobile technology and government messages. Kerrang! partnered with Paco Rabanne to promote Black XS with a cross media campaign to give readers the chance to enter their bands to win a recording deal with Search & Destroy Records. This generated 500 entrants, a huge spike in Kerrang.com traffic and culminated in the final 4 bands fighting it out at a live gig at the O2.

Features / Benefits
Kerrang! has 29 years of heritage and is the biggest music weekly in the world. - Kerrang! is actually really young with a median age of 22. Having a younger profile is a big advantage as traditionally this age group is elusive (and expensive) to reach. - Kerrang! readers are the heaviest music consumers purchasing over 6 albums per month on average (53% more than the national average) and 8 times more likely to spend over £200 a year on albums. The readers are also 5.5 times more likely to attend a rock gig.

Final Music Video: Daughters - Drown

Here is our final production of our music video, after taking consideration of audience feedback, there has been little changes such as correcting the lip syncing, adding more shots to the fast paced editing and also more mirror shots to allow the idea of self image to be portrayed. The entire aspect from shooting on location, story boarding, creating a star image with the use of many close ups and lip syncing from Georgie and producing the video was eventful. The most difficult aspect was dealing with the lip syncing in order to fit the video, however through extending few shots, the problem was solved. In addition from the draft copy of 'Drown', the audience enjoyed the flipped and chaotic paced shots, therefore we created more flipped shots and added more band footage in order to please our audience.
