Target Audience

I would like to choose the Rock Genre for our music video as in my group it is our common interest furthermore is because the target audience is aimed at the same age as me (18), therefore it will be easier to relate my band members with people I know, also this genre's music video's are usually low budget and often shot in, public places such as public parks, city streets, pub's. These are places in which I will be able to film with it being a problem. If I chose the genre R&B for example the conventions for that music video would be at either in the rough streets of America, contrasting against the life of luxury, with big manor houses, and expensive sports car's, which I don't have access too. The genre of  Rock just makes sense to do as it's the music genre I like to listen to, the target audience relates to me and also there music video are low budget and are usually at settings which I can get access too. The Target audience would be 16-25, mainly young adults who can relate to this genre.

Mood Board

This is our mood board of ideas and concepts that we are currently discussing. We thought about different locations and symbolism. For example the clock will symbolise time passing quickly as the song is about growing up. We would also like a stage performance hence the crowd of people. There was an idea about filming in a autumn forest as part of the performance.

Building The Songbird in Norway

The band are starting to make a name for themselves, by travelling in Europe. This is one of their performance videos in Norway, filmed by Georgia. All shots are handheld. This video captures the emotions of the band, and expressing both their fun and serious side. The vocalist is Georgia's brother. In addition, as a group we like the concept of moving away from a narrative and make a more performance kind of video.

Thinking about ideas for our song choice

After receiving the original lyrics, we discussed ideas about what kind of music video we would like to create. This is a very hard task, as everyone in my group has so many great ideas however it is hard to pick as all of them are good ideas.

Conventions of the Rock Genre

There are many different genres of music videos in which there are different codes and conventions which show the style of the genre.

 Rock Music Videos
  • Eerie/weird videos
  • Displays the band performing on stage
  • Hand-held shots
  • Usually no narrative
  • Usually dark/deep colours
  • Uneasy camera movements
  • Usually no use of special effects
Slipknot- The Devil In I...one of the most scariest and weird videos I've ever come across

Indie/Rock Music Videos
  •  Sometimes has a narrative
  •  Some special effects
  •  Shows band performing
  •  May be black and white
  • Close up of artists and
  • characters shown in video
  • Usually calm setting, but changes
  • when beat kicks in
  •  Shows artist or band throughout the video
Linkin Park - In The End has so many special effects mainly due to being one of the most successful rock bands ever! There are band shots and so many close ups of Chester, when the beat kicks in the video is epic, which Linkin Park can be known for.

Building The Songbird - N' Shit song choice

We have decided to use the song N'shit by the band as it has a very good narrative story behind it also about growing up in the area. There are a few ideas circulating amongst the group at the moment. The vocals I am not greatly keen on, as my taste in comparison to the rest of my group is very different, however I believe the instrumental is amazing. As a group, there was an idea of a performance alongside a narrative video, as the lyrics suit the concept very well.

Building The Songbird

As a group we have decided to use Georgia's brother band. Building The Songbird, a post-hardcore genre band. I think the idea of having an original band is amazing. He have permission to use Georgia's brother band, they have also realised a new EP, with 5 different songs. We are currently making a decision about which music video we would like to use.

Here is the four band members of Building the Songbird:

As a group we look very much forward to working with the band.

Here is a little  bit about the band's genre:
Post-hardcore is a genre of music that is derived from and has origins in the hardcore punk music genre, itself an offshoot of the broader punk rock movement. Like post punk, post-hardcore is a term for a broad constellation of groups. Many emerged from the hardcore punk scene, or took inspiration from hardcore, while concerning themselves with a wider degree of expression. Post hardcore punk typically features very fast tempos, loud volume, and heavy bass levels.

The Prelim

This is the final result of our Prelim, there was many difficulties as my group had to reshot few scenes due to the music and the lip syncing not being exact, other than that we believe our prelim was close enough to the actual One Direction song 'One Way Or Another'. There was also a chance to try out the new equipment such as the DSLR's, which was a whole different experience, as I have never really recorded with the DSLR's unlike the rest of my group who are also Photography students, however it was really fun learning how to use the different equipment to film with.

Prelim: Behind the Scenes

Filming our Prelim was a very fun task. We used our iPhones to film and also used the Panasonic flip camera. There was mainly handheld camera shots as in the actual One Direction clip, it was all filmed by the members themselves and not professionally, therefore handheld camera work was essential in our prelim.

Orla acted as Niall Horan, this was a mid shot in the showers, we used a plastic bag as a shower cap and soap similar to that of Niall.

Georgia also acted as Niall, as we were unable to actually get into a moving car with a roof, for our own safety, Georgia stood by a car with a cap and glasses. Used the iPhone for a close up shot, therefore the quality of the filming was not clear as in comparison to the flip camera.
This was my favourite shot, as it took a lot of filming attempts to run alongside the beat of the music. Our friend Sam also joined us, as we all tried to copy Niall's leaping across the scenery.
This is the long shot and was filmed with the Panasonic flip camera, that was held still on the tripod.

Prelim Ideas

For my group Prelim we have decided to go for a song that is a complete contrast to the kind of songs we would like to do a video for, as a group we have decided for our main final project to do a song under the genre of hardcore rock. We have decided this, significantly because we enjoy this genre of music in my group. As a contrast we have decided to do One Directions, 'One Way or Another' which is an upbeat and Pop song.

We would like to do the filming mostly with handheld shots, with many close ups and will attempt our bests to lip sync correctly.

From the music video we could like to use from 0:52-1:12 of the clip.

audience feedback

I decided to conduct a poll for audience feedback with general questions about music videos. I asked 10 individuals from various ages groups 18-30. I will take this information into consideration when creating my own music video. Such as the music video should have both narrative and performance aspects. Furthermore there should be a meaning to the narrative and that fast paced editing is preferred.
Here are my results:
